ABOUT THIS REPORT: This is a daily report on Flint and Genesee County, and where it appears in the news, blogs, etc. I'll provide the links and your job is to help create a positive light around Flint.

If a blogger is bashing Flint and Genesee County, go post a positive message. If there is an article about the depressed economy in Flint, go post something uplifting. If someone writes about 'nothing to do in Flint', write back about the great burger you had at Blackstone's or the day you had at the Sloan Museum! It's our mission to bring attention to the positive things happening in a city we all care about. If we don't do it, no one else will. Let's take responsibility for our home and our image. We are Flint!

Oct. 22, 2009

Good morning,

I spoke last night with members of the ABWA (American Business Womens Association) Crossroad Connection Chapter and I've added some of them to this e-mail group. So welcome and thanks for letting me speak to your group - you were a fun and lively group! FYI, the addition of these women has officially meant that more than 700 Flint area supporters are now getting this Changing Perceptions of Flint report every weekday. Awesome!

ALSO,
I wanted to share this about by morning Amtrak train ride from Flint to Lansing Wednesday: The Flint Area Convention and Visitors Bureau had the chance to ride the Amtrak train from Flint to Lansing Wednesday (Oct. 21) as part of a 35th anniversary celebration of the Blue Water Line from Port Huron to Chicago. Along the way we met Sarah Miller, a Michigan State University college student who lives in Burton and takes the train twice a week from Flint for her classes in East Lansing. Sarah, 19, explained she doesn’t have a car and feels the train is about the same cost as driving - sometimes it's cheaper. She gets a special college student rate, and said she pays on average just $14 for the round trip each day. Other people on board were riding all the way to Sacramento, Calif., and St. Louis, Missouri. For details about Amtrak, including schedules, fares and more information go to Amtrak.com or call 800-USA-RAIL. Click here for a Flint Journal story about the event with quotes from Sarah.

FLINT CVB services:
The Flint CVB can help you with public relations work (think press conferences and news release writing and distribution) and social media consulting (think Facebook, Twitter etc..) for a reasonable fee for members and non-members of the Flint Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. If you're interested contact me at mbach@flint.travel or (810) 232-3288. Also, if your group or organization is seeking guest speakers I'd be happy to come and talk about the things were doing at the Flint CVB in the area of social media and changing perceptions of Flint. (FYI, I don't charge to come out and talk to your group.)

UPCOMING NEWS CONFERENCES/GATHERINGS:

THURSDAY, OCT. 22:
To observe its first-place win in the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Xbox Gameroom Give-a-way, Hurley Medical Center invites the community to share in the celebration Thursday, Oct. 22, at 10 a.m. in the hospital’s Merliss Brown Auditorium. In addition, Dr. Alan Klein, Grand Blanc pediatric dentist, previously announced that he will donate $10,000 on behalf of the Sheppy Dog Fund for Hurley Medical Center’s Pediatric Services if the hospital won a top 3 spot in the contest.

Two informational meetings about the Holiday Wish list (see more info on this at the end of this report):
THURSDAY, Oct. 22, 4 p.m.
Both meetings by Resource Genesee will be held in the board room on the second floor of the American Red Cross Building, 1401 S. Grand Traverse, Flint. You will need to sign in at the welcome desk and receive a visitor’s badge.

IF you're having a news conference feel free to share it with me and I'll share it with the rest of the group. I think it's best that we all know what each other are doing so we don't have media trying to decide which of two or three news conferences taking place at the same time that they should attend.

ON to the Report ...

EATING FLINT TALKS CHANGING PERCEPTIONS:
Well this is a first for our Changing Perceptions of Flint report: Here's a post from the blog "Eating Flint" by Bob Barnett hoping to get included in the Changing Perceptions report. So Bob, you got your wish. And we've added Bob, a staunch Flint supporter, as a recipient of this daily report. (I added him to the weekly college report too so maybe he'll mention that report on his blog as well - hint, hint). His post is about the New York Times piece by Dan Barry, but it also talks quite a bit about this report. It's a good read and well written, such as this part: I’ve even used image boosting phrases in my previous posts like “our beloved city,” “the vibrant city I choose to live in,” and “Flint: At least we’re not Saginaw.” My words are practically oozing positive light around Flint, and those of you who read the blog are like hundred-watt energy saving light bulbs brightening up the city as you talk about it with your friends and family. And the blog researcher for Changing Perceptions of Flint doesn’t even know this blog exists? We have work to do, my friends. We have work to do.

HURLEY MEDICAL CENTER:
The win of the xbox gameroom by Hurley and two other hospitals in the nation continues to get a lot of coverage across the Web. Hurley is going to celebrate today: To observe its first-place win in the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Xbox Gameroom Give-a-way, Hurley Medical Center invites the community to share in the celebration Thursday, Oct. 22, at 10 a.m. in the hospital’s Merliss Brown Auditorium. Here's a post from the Iowa Citizen Press, and one on the media newswire. and one on gameangel and one on a U.P. TV station's Web site.

E. PIPER AVE. GARDEN:
The East Piper Ave Garden by Harry Ryan and his neighbors was prominently featured in the recent New York Times article by Dan Barry and the garden is featured here on ABC 12 under the headline: "Flint's north side becoming gardening Mecca". Excellent!

FLINT CREPE CO.
Here's a Flint Journal story about the Flint Crepe Co. moving it's portable business to the Flint Farmer's Market.

PURE MICHIGAN:
Here's a post from the Grand Rapids Press/mlive about the Pure Michigan Facebook page reaching 20,000 fans. There were multiple posts about the Pure Michigan page reaching this milestone. FYI, the Flint, Michigan Facebook fan page has about 4,350 fans so we got a ways to go, but we're getting there. Here's a Detroit News column that encourages communities to work with the Pure Michigan campaign.

KETTERING PROFESSOR:
Brian McCartin, a Kettering prof, got an award. Here's the headline: "Kettering University professor's tribute to a little letter wins him an e-normous prize."

NEW JOBS FOR OUR AREA:
Some new business projects in Burton and Mt. Morris Township could create 130 new jobs. Here's the details: Woodworth Inc., a Detroit-based company that provides heat-treating for the automotive and other industries, has proposed the biggest investment: more than $20 million to renovate a building where Isuzu Motors once finished work on commercial trucks and to construct an additional building at I-75 and Pierson Road. In Burton, Flint-based Paramount Improvements, a 20-year home remodeling company, plans to move operations of a California sunroom manufacturing business it has acquired to the city, creating 40 new jobs.

FLINT AREA STUDENTs ARTWORK in NEW BOOK:
Three Flint area students had their artwork selected for a recent statewide contest involving Detroit Tiger Curtis Granderson. Grandersoon wrote a book and illustrations for the book were done by fourth-grade students from throughout the state. We had three area students with work selected. The students are Breanna Schwartz, Madison Academy (Flint); Julia Boudreau, Seymour Elementary (Flushing); and Kerryn Taylor, Central Elementary (Flushing).

YOUR HELP SOUGHT:
ROWE OFFICIAL HONORED:
Here's a story about the IMA Recreation Association Community Salute to honor John D. Matonich of ROWE Professional Services Co. There's two comments on this post on mlive about John and one is bashing on him, but the second one defends him. That's what I like to see - respond to the negative with a positive. Here's the bashing comment: Stop the presses!! A UP inspired roast for some Van Dyke sportin' dude nobody has ever heard of? Should be hyuck hyuck-larious!! And here's the positive comment: Hey John has come a long way since he graduated. Started working for Rowe and finally bought out the company. You can bash him all you want but he still works for a living and has two kids in school also. I wish I could be there for the roast. If you know John feel free to post your own comments in support of him.

ART ON TAP AT FIA:
Here's an mlive story about the Art on Tap event taking place Saturday at the Flint Institute of Arts. Should be a great event.

FORBES LIST:
The local media has picked up on the newest list about Forbes on the poorest cities in America. Flint and Saginaw are both on it. In the Oct. 13 Changing Perceptions of Flint e-mail report, I linked to the Oct. 12 Forbes article which had the headline "America's Most Impoverished Cities". Interesting, that no major media seemed to pick up on it, but now - a week later - abcnews.go.com reposted the story with this headline: "America's 10 Poorest Cities" and guess what, the story is everywhere. I just found that very interesting. Here's a post about the new Forbes list from TV 5.

YOUR HELP SOUGHT????
A blogger who previously unfairly criticized Flint is back. In his original post, he drove to Flint took some photos of a few abandoned buildings and posted them along with this statement: Except for the downtown which has been revitalized much of the city looks like a junk yard. Myself and others posted comments on his blog simply asking for balance, such as if he liked the downtown why not also post a couple photos of Blackstone's or the Wade Trim building. But he didn't. Now he's written a new post apparently directed at us saying this new Forbes "poorest cities" list vindicates him. I've already posted a comment on his blog asking him - once again, in the name of fairness - to also link to the recent New York Times article by Dan Barry. Part of me just wants to ignore this blogger who obviously has it out for Flint. But I'm going to leave it up to you. Feel free to post a comment on this blog if you like, but it's your call.

MOTT FOUNDATION ON TWITTER:
The C.S. Mott Foundation is posting on Twitter its recent grant awards. Here's one of themMott grants Foundation for Human Rights $120,000 for General Purposes http://bit.ly/4iCzb3

MICHAEL MOORE:
Here's a post by the Wall Street Journal about Michael Moore and his new film. It mentions this, which I hadn't seen before: Mr. Moore, in an open letter on his Web site, describes his latest movie as "two hours of a tragicomedy crime story starring a bunch of vampires who just weren't satisfied with simply destroying Flint, Michigan -- they had to try and see if they could take down the whole damn country."

GASC TECH CENTER:
Here's a post about the Flint Board of Education gives GASC Technology Center authorization to offer students academic credit toward state graduation requirements.

NICEST PLACE TO LIVE IN MICHIGAN:
Here's a forum thread that starts off with the question - where is the nicest place to live in Michigan. One of the people suggests Grand Blanc. Feel free to make your own suggestions.

GRAND BLANC ARTIST:
Grand Blanc Artist Suzanne Johnson is getting some training from the FBI: Johnson, 48, recently returned from a trip to the FBI training academy in Quanico, VA, and headquarters in Washington DC, where she learned the ins and outs of just what it takes to be an FBI agent.
